My experience on eBay in January/February 2003 was that ALL of the REX 6000 units being sold as "new" but without the original box (i.e. "bulk-packaged") were actually 1MB units whose firmware had been flash-upgraded to display (incorrectly) that they had 2MB memory. I purchased two of these in January and had to return them after testing them and finding out that they were actually 1MB units. Since then I have been following the eBay auctions and I have seen only one or two which were actual new 2MB units as far as I could tell.
I think the big lot of units which were mentioned on rex6000.org last year was probably a big lot of bulk-packaged 1MB units dumped by Xircom/Intel and then flipped to one or more wholesalers. These have probably been picked up and transferred to various vendors in various quantities and are now more or less dominating the eBay market.
Having said that, there was an auction last week by eBay ID "romych" which explicitly identified the item as a 2MB unit and which stated that the serial number began L008M... and not the 1MB number of L007M. That auction went for over US$100. "romych" is one of the few vendors which seems correctly to identify almost all of their "bulk-packaged" units as 1MB units.
And I would say that about once every month or two someone posts a used 2MB model REX 6000 on eBay, but those also tend to go for US$60 - $80, or more.
The only other reliable source for 2MB units that I know of is this "gmugnier" fellow, who has a standing offer listed here in the Vendors section, and who is selling new, boxed units for US$100.
I have no interest in either of the vendors mentioned in this post, and do not know either of them personally.
Phil. |

I bought one off of eBay a year or two ago as a backup one and it's a 2mb one that wasn't "bulk packaged" or anything. Think I paid like 60 or 70 for it. It's still in it's box in case I ever sit on the one I'm using now (been close a few times). |

pkiff above is correct. Above I posted that I'd got two spares off eBay I found on arrival they were one meg units. They were described as 2mb but were in fact L007 units with only one meg. Both went back. Seems 2 meg units are getting rare! I'm still looking. There are a couple on eBay now that the sellers say are L008 units. |
