I sent this out as an announcement to everyone, but just in case you don't get it or it gets flagged as spam or something, here it is again.
Sometime within the next week or so the forums will be down. I am transfering all the data over to a different database. The actual downtime should be minimal (I'm estimating 10-15 mins, max), and all you will basically see is a "this forum is closed" message. Try back in a half hour or so and everything should be back up and running.
LONGER REASON:
What I'm doing is renaming the database in a few places to reflect the rexforum.com domain name. Durring this time, no writes to the database can occur since it's possible for the write to happen to the old database and won't get transfered to the new one. And since it's not really possible to "rename" a database; I am in the process of creating the new database and as soon as it's all up and running (takes a couple days), I'll shut down the forum, copy all the info over to the new database, change the configuration of forum so it uses the new one, and then turn on the forum again. Not that big of a process, but wanted to let everyone know so they don't see that closed message and think the forum shut down or something.
This isn't going to really improve performance or anything, it is just some internal configuration changes.
Also the cookies the keep your login information are going to be reset as well, so don't be surprised if you have to relogin after this is all done. |

I just got it transfered over. I thought changing the cookie name was going to cause everyone to log out, but apparently it doesn't. So there may be some orphaned cookies now. I would suggest just clearing out all the cookies for the domain www.rexforum.com. If you don't know how to do that, then don't worry about it. It's not a big deal. I also cleared out all the cached files, so the pages may load a little slower until the cache builds up again. I've also noticed that it's getting a couple unable to connect to db errors, so I may have done it too early. Anyway, everything should be stabalized in a week or so. |
